Mount Airy-based pavement preservation specialist FPT was engaged by North Carolina DOT to supply Texacrete for extensive bridge joint nosing repairs at Snow's Cut Bridge, Carolina Beach.

Texacrete is a flexible, non-shrink elastomeric concrete ideal for use as a bridge joint nosing material and offers the following benefits to client and contractor:

  • Excellent bond strength
  • Resistant to freeze-thaw, road salts and fuel oil
  • Hard wearing with built-in flexibility
  • Extremely low modulus of elasticity in flexure
  • Durable and long lasting
  • Excellent adhesion to substrate
  • Very long service life

The construction work was the most extensive rehabilitation in the bridge's 50-year history. Work included replacing worn-out concrete on the deck and dilapidated bearings, painting the girders, and re-striping the lane lines, among other things. The project is expected to extend the life of the bridge by 30 years.

To complete the work, crews closed two of the bridge's four lanes, restricting cars to two-way traffic in two lanes. The lanes close one side at a time, with inbound and outbound traffic flowing on the same side of the median.
